The Foodie Weekend at Old Delhi

Part of Delhi’s rich culture is its delicious cuisine. Delhi is the restaurant capital of India. The diverse cuisine of the city includes punjabi cuisine, mughlai cuisine, international cuisine, kulfi specialty, and paan. All of these delectable cuisines can be found at one of Delhi’s numerous traditional restaurants or local eating joints. We tried to ventured few of the joints and share our rich experience with all of you.

Pls share this post with all your friends so that no one can miss such a good food at delhi.

This below writeup is written by Mr.Oberoi

Myself, amar and navtej ventured last friday night to a restaurant called --"purani dilli" in zakir nagar..recommended by a friend Mr.Rituraj Gill for mughlai food.

We ordered tandoori chicken,changezi chicken,haleem,chicken ishtew,and tandoori/ roomali roti..

Changezi chicken was spicy and absolutely delicious for my taste....Halem was a gooey mesh of dal and mutton, had a unique taste and good experience for a change....ishtew was delicate with whole spices and had a comparitively milder gravey than changezi...tandoori chicken was very soft and succelent covered with spices and butter,,,absolutely one of the best muglai dinners we had ever feasted on in along time. And with the price for changezi-quater-65,tandoori(65)haleem(110)chicken ishtew(70) an absolute steal.

The ambience too was very good with dim lights and excellent service..will visit again and many more times...Changezi chicken was spicy and absolutely delicious for my taste....Halem was a gooey mesh of dal and mutton, had a unique taste and good experience for a change....ishtew was delicate with whole spices and had a comparitively milder gravey than changezi...tandoori chicken was very soft and succelent covered with spices and butter,,,absolutely one of the best muglai dinners we had ever feasted on in along time. And with the price for changezi-quater-65,tandoori(65)haleem(110)chicken ishtew(70) an absolute steal. The ambience too was very good with dim lights and excellent service..will visit again and many more times...

Foodie weekend continues...Saturday ..jama masjid feast.

We reached old delhi around 7pm.Started our evening journey with buff seekh kabas and tikka.they are spicy, succelent, and the chutney perfectly complimenting the meat.totally delicious. for 15rs a plate,an absolutely steal.

Then we ventured into the much hyped aljawahar restaurnat.Had heard stories of the tandoori raan(roast leg of goat/lamb),so ordered on along with almost the entire kabab menu, mutton seekh, chicken seekh, and shammi kabab.

For almost rs 100 a plate each and compared with the recently consumed street kababs,,they were bland and less spicy.the mutton seekh was o.k.Raan came on a platter dressed with tomotoes...some parts were chewy and hard and some soft, the spice was not that great and almost bland .Since we had to pay rs 350 for it we gorged on every piece of flesh left on the bone and finished everything.Appearances are deceptive.Look and feel of the dish didn't compare to the taste..one time experience...

Have to say,,al jawahar is out of my wish list from now on and will not venture into it again,,maybe amar with his delicate tastes and royal needs can host his wedding reception there but it is too expensive and overhyped for my taste and needs...the street food in jama masjid beats it HANDS down.in very way.

Next venture will focus only on the street food and small eateries /joints and not the restauants.

We came out and went for a walk in the bylanes of the matia mahal bazaar..we went to tauseef biryani and tasted one of the best buff biryani one can find in that area.It is adjacent to shabarti nihari,,the rice was delicous and the meat soft and tender and completely cooked, prefer without chutney to get a better taste of the biryani.

We tasted shahi tukra, rich sweet meat of khoya, ghee, nuts, bread, milk and host of other goodies...absolutely out of the world.

With whatever space left in our stomachs we tasted a glass of khajoor milk shake which was delicous and had a very unique taste ...After that we saw ice chilled kheer served in khullars..Our gluttony knows no bounds...Was too inticing to leave it as it is so tried the dish also..It was by far the best kheer we had ever in our life---flavourful,aromatic,perfect in sweetness, and for rs10 dirt cheap.....

Finished our night with prince pan which was also not that great and easily overhyped, have had better and cheaper paans at many places in delhi.Zero tension paan for rs25 further added to my tension after chewing it for 10 seconds,

Verdict---Purani Dilli in Zakir Nagar beats Al-jawahar 10-0 interms of quality, taste and price.Have consumed gravy dishes earlier in aljawahar but purani dilli is a winner..

Eating Out in Delhi. The Foodie Sunday @ Red Fort

I know almost one week had passed since I posted on my blog, becoz we were planning to go outside delhi. But due the finencial year ending & MBA exams, few of our friends [6 guys & 2 gals] droped their idea this time. Rahul & I had gone to Lajpat nagar market first to fasttrack whaches showroom. Rahul joined me first time for such kinda EOID [Eating Out in Delhi].

That was 29th March'2009, & we were 4 on two BULL’s [Bullet Bikes]. Rahul with Priyanka & Nitu was sitting on my Bull. Well friends, Rahul & Priyanka don’t want me to publish their pics publically on this blog, I will only post mine & Nitu’s pics over here.

First of all I would like to thank all of these 3, & in particular:

Rahul: Amazing guy, Full with energy, doing job @ Gurgaon & ready all the time for travelling. His punch line is “Rules are made to be broken” i.e. why he don’t care bout his boss. Kool haan !!! Age 23 yrs

Priyanka: Nice & decent gal who wanna to njoy her life to the fullest. She dnt wanna to bound herself in between the society wall. She always look forward & understand well how to tackel the stituation, especially when it become wrost. Currentely doing JOB with Wipro BPO. Age 22 yrs

Nitu: She was the youngest among all of us. According to her, this was here first EOID. She is studying in 12th. Age 19 yrs

Friends, I dnt remember when the idea came to my mind to spend rest of the day @ Red Fort. It must have been soon after we started Gyani Faluda [with pure khoya in it…oh my god!!!], which was soon after we had started delicious prantha’s from the famous Pranthe wali galli, which was soon after we had mithaa PAN from one & only Pan Wala near Al Jawahar hotel, Jama Masjid.

Pan, prantha’s, Faluda & our bull’s; finally, we were on to wht really mattered in life, the stuff that made our Delhi life bearable, especially when you are far away from your family & facing the real life yourself.

The Giant Red Fort………hmmmm, I don’t know the height but one has to take the clandestine services to get to the roof.

11.00 am 12.00 pm – Pranthe Wali Galli….Had 4 different prantha’a [Banana prantha, Khoya prantha, mix veg prantha & mutter prantha]

12.00 pm to 01.00 pm – Had Yummmy Gyani faluda…..only half glass……pure khoya…oh my god !!!!!

01.00 pm to 05.30 pm - Red Fort [Check below pics]

5.30 pm to onwards…. - Boating near Old Fort......Majaa aa gyaaaaaaaaaaaa…..

And then returned back to Home.

Few of mine friends ask me so many times that, wht is the fun on this EOID. Why dnt you sit with us @ & njoying the drink. So, my answer to all those chumps is : ALCOHOL IS NO LONGER NOVELTY….This meant we could drink less & not throw up every time to certify having a good time.
